Five Minutes With: Fashion blogger Nuala Gorham

by ,

Fashion blogger Nuala Gorham has mastered the art of looking like a million dollars for pennies on her blog Penny And Polaroids. The gorgeous Galway brunette documents her impeccable style on her award-winning website and has received critical acclaim from top fashion publications including Vogue and Grazia. And what began as a hobby is now a full-time career for the in-demand stylist. Here Nuala tells The Beauty Inbox about her fashionable life.

On getting into blogging…
I always loved fashion – as a young teen I would ask my mom to buy me Vogue. I kind of fell into modelling while doing my Leaving Cert and got my first taste of working in fashion. I became hugely interested in blogging when it first came on the scene and after a couple of years of deliberating, I decided to set my blog up as a hobby and it all kind of took off from there. I had studied Psychology for four years and while I loved it, I really wanted to focus on something creative. I realised how much I loved writing and the journalism side just evolved from the blog. I always had an interest in being a freelance writer (probably from watching too much Sex and the City) but I never really thought it was an attainable goal. It just goes to show anything is possible if you have the confidence to go for it.

On favourite places to shop…
I love Zara and Brown Thomas. I’m also obsessed with online designer shop Shopbop lately. They have so many designer labels but also have a huge range of affordable pieces. I’ve bought quite a bit from there and even with the customs bill (they’re US based) most of the stuff is still cheaper than if I were to buy it here.

On advice to up-and-coming fashion journalists…
Start a blog! Even if you don’t pursue blogging I think creating a blog to use as a portfolio is the best idea. I was thinking about doing an internship for some time but being from Galway it would have been a huge expense to move to Dublin for an unpaid position, so I just kept working away on my blog and luckily that worked for me. If you are lucky enough to land a lucrative internship, be sure to work super hard. It’s not just enough to show up every day – magazines work with countless interns so you really need to impress if you want to be remembered.

On style icons…
I love Olivia Palermo. I know it’s not a very unique style icon as everyone seems to love her but her style is flawless. I also loved Edie Sedgwick and Brigitte Bardot, they were fearless.

On staying in shape…
I try to do weight training either at home or in the gym a couple of times a week. I also love hot yoga from time to time but I’m terrible for keeping it up. I tend to sacrifice working out when I get really busy with work but lately I’m making more of an effort to find a balance.

On a typical day’s diet…
I’m not always great for having breakfast. I’ll sometimes have it mid-morning having just had coffee. If I’m being good, I’ll have granola and yoghurt but if I’m on the go I’ll often just grab a croissant. I’m quite bad for snacking throughout the day but lately I’ve been making salads with humous on bread for lunch and a stir-fry or cajun-spiced chicken with vegetables and sweet potato for dinner. I’m quite good for juicing and making smoothies but I can rarely resist pizza or Haribo! From time to time I’ll take cod liver oil tablets but I’m really bad for forgetting them. I never keep it up. My guilty food pleasure is toasted cheese, burgers and any sugary sweets.

On her make-up secrets…
I use Bumble And Bumble Quenching Masque to give my hair a moisture boost and use a Glam Glow Mud Mask on my face. I use my InStyler to style my hair and add some individual false eyelashes to get that red-carpet look.

On her skin care routine…
I cleanse my face with Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm and use a powdered exfoliator once a week. I also have an Eve Lom Rescue Mask which I use to battle any blemishes that pop up. I tend to use coconut oil to cleanse my face a couple of times a week and find it works wonders but I try not to overuse it as it’s very oily for my skin.

On her favourite make-up products…
I love a sun-kissed bronzed look with strong but natural brows, big lashes and a nude lip. I don’t tend to change my make-up look very often. My desert island make-up products would be coconut oil because I could use it for my skin, teeth and hair, Benefit Roller Lash mascara and Chanel Soleil de Tan bronzer. Finally, my worst beauty faux pas was tweezing my brows. I regret ever going near them because they’re not as thick as they once were.

On her proudest achievement…
Turning my hobby into my career by becoming a full-time blogger. I’ve reached so many personal goals and milestones these past two years since I started blogging but being able to say I’m a full-time blogger makes me feel very proud.
