New skincare favourites

If there’s one thing I’m passionate about, it’s having a great skincare routine. As someone with oily/combination skin, I have a strict cleansing ritual to ensure clear skin (says she, a face full of hormonal pimples at the moment).

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with micellar waters so I usually use a cream cleanser. After this I’ll use a gentle exfoliant (Image Skincare’s Brightening Exfoliant being a favourite), followed by a toner, serum and moisturiser. Phew!

So today I thought I’d introduce you to two recent additions to my skincare arsenal. Let the deep cleansing begin…

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm
Much loved by professionals, this solid cleanser has earned something of a cult status among beauty bloggers. My lovely sister Emma bought me this for my birthday after reading my complaints about micellar waters and I was chuffed as it’s really spendy at €29.

The balm itself looks a bit off-putting in the tub – like a lump of unfragranced lard. However, it does melt on contact with the skin and removes every trace of even the most stubborn make-up.

I tend to steer clear of oil cleansers as they often leave a greasy film on my skin but the Clinique balm washes away beautifully, leaving me with soft, perfectly cleansed skin. The balm undoubtedly deserves its cult status but I would have trouble parting with thirty quid to then wash it down the sink. I will, however, continue to happily accept gifts of the cleanser (!).

Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence
Forget your toners, essences are the latest skincare must-have. To be honest, I’d never heard of ‘essences’ until Kiehl’s sent this one to try. A lightweight liquid, essences are basically a less concentrated serum that are designed to be quickly absorbed into the skin.

Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence is formulated with Iris flower and claims to “boost radiance and reduce fine lines”. Which all sounds awesome. I was sent pages of scientific data to back this up but essentially the product contains Lipo Hydroxy Acid (removes dead skin cells), Iris extract (nutrient rich) and Sodium Hyaluronate (hydrates and plumps up skin) – all powerful ingredients.

I use this after cleansing to prep skin before my serum and moisturiser. I add a few drops to the palm of my hands and gently press it in (don’t use a cotton pad as it will absorb all of the product).

It’s still early days and I’m still a little baffled by it all. However, it does smell great and as it’s Kiehl’s, I’m hopeful of a little radiance. Available in stores this July, priced €40.
