Facial oils have been having a bit of a beauty resurgence. Promising a more youthful complexion, everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim Kardashian credit oils for their glowing skin. Here the experts reveal why.
Free radical protection
Antioxidant has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years. Free radicals, meanwhile, are the nemeses of antioxidants. Generated through pollution, UV light, stress, smoking and poor diet, they attack our healthy cells causing skin to age faster. Oils, however, can combat this.
Celeb dermatologist David Colbert, of Colbert M.D. Skincare, reveals: “Many botanical oils are potent antioxidants. In the morning, massage a few drops onto clean skin, wait two minutes, and apply sunscreen or foundation as usual.”
Plump up skin
From your late 30s on wrinkles begin to appear as the skin’s natural oils decrease causing dryness. A good facial oil will replenish your own natural oils lost through ageing and lifestyle.
Colbert adds: “Because oils are lipophilic, or fat loving, they pass though the lipid layer of the skin faster, preventing water loss and plumping skin.”
Helps creams work
As oils absorb better than traditional creams, applying them before your regular moisturiser allows the skin to absorb the ingredients in the creams.
Celeb facialist Yvonne Martin tells Elle: “You need something with smaller molecules [like oils], which will go deeper into the skin. Even with all the nanotechnology found in serums today, they are still not as penetrative as a good-quality oil.”
And now for TBI’s face oil recommendations…
Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, from €19.50
I’m a long-time fan of the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse oils (review here). Celebrating 25 glorious-scented years, Nuxe has reformulated its best-selling oil to include tsubaki oil – a variety of the Japanese Camellia flower whose oil is particularly rich in omega 9 – and argan oil.
This multi-tasking dry oil can be used on the face, hair and body. I always take the smaller bottle with gold shimmer away with me and use it on my pasty limbs, post-beach.
The Body Shop Oils of Life Revitalising Face Oil, €48
If you’re looking for a little luxury, you won’t do better than The Body Shop Oils of Life face oil. Formulated with black cumin seed oil, camellia seed oil and rosehip seed oil, the products promise to deliver concentrated sources of essential nutrients to the skin. I’m a massive fan of the range (review here) – what’s not to love?!
Elemis Superfood Facial Oil, €52
I got this mini bottle in a Christmas set and it’s been a firm favourite since then (review here). Formulated with a blend of anti-oxidant and omega-rich broccoli, flax seed and daikon radish, my skin is soft and healthy looking by morning. A real treat.
