Ultimate festive hot chocolate

It’s cold, it’s dark, X-Factor/Strictly/I’m A Celeb is back on the telly and you’re in your winter fat pants. What a perfect time then to cosy up and drink copious amounts of hot chocolate. This recipe is our take on an Italian version we enjoyed on a winter break there many years ago. It’s rich, creamy and not, I repeat, not diet friendly!

So here it is, with a few twists, to warm up those Irish winter nights. Enjoy!

Basic recipe (makes 2 cups)
- 2 cups of organic full-fat milk
-  1 large bar of chopped dark chocolate (85% cocoa)
- Dash of double cream

In a pot, combine the milk and chocolate. Melt the chocolate over a low heat, stirring constantly. Once melted, add the double cream and your flavourings (see below). Serve hot with marshmallows and enjoy!

For spicy hot chocolate
- Basic recipe
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch cayenne pepper
- Marshmallows or cinnamon sticks to garnish

For peppermint hot chocolate
- Basic recipe
- Two to three drops of peppermint essence per mug
- Peppermint candy canes or marshmallows to garnish

For Nutella hot chocolate
- Basic recipe
- Stir in 4 tablespoons of Nutella
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- Top with fresh whipped cream or marshmallows
