You can’t swing a cat these days and not hit a hipster carrying a Turmeric Latte. But lately I’ve been thinking, maybe these healthy-looking hipsters might be on to something.
So in a bid to wean myself off my serious coffee addiction, I’ve been on a mission to find a little pick-me-up that would give me the rush of energy without the inevitable crash and burn of caffeine.
Enter turmeric – the golden manna from heaven. A potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, the spice’s active ingredient curcumin is said to turn on the genes that enhance the body’s synthesis of antioxidants and therefore slows down the ageing process. Hello! I’m all over it.
If that’s not enough, turmeric also helps reduce gas and bloating, which is a common side-effect of drinking too much coffee, and is said to boost memory function. Winning!
Here’s my turbo-boosting Turmeric Espresso. Chin-chin!
- Thumb-size piece of peeled turmeric (fresh is best over dried)
- 1 carrot, peeled
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
Peel the veg and juice together, along with the cayenne pepper. And enjoy! Instant energy guaranteed.
