If I were a fruit, I’d be a grapefruit. A little bit zingy, a little bit uplifting and you either love me or hate me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When I was pregnant, all I craved was grapefruit. All day, every day, I’d have eaten grapefruit with a side of grapefruit. I’m still pretty obsessed with it, to be honest.
According to Dr Google, if you’re craving grapefruit, your body may need more fibre, potassium, Vitamin C, or all of above as the average person in the Western world doesn’t get enough of any of that.
To fuel my general grapefruit obsession, I always carry around a homemade grapefruit oil blend in a mini roller (recipe below), to dab on my pulse points when I need a little boost.
Grapefruit essential oil is a wonderful all-rounder and is a natural diuretic, disinfectant, stimulant, antidepressant, antiseptic, lymphatic, and tonic. As with all essential oils, a little goes a long way as they are potent stuff and must be diluted in a carrier oil (jojaba or sweet almond, for example) before applying to skin.
You can use grapefruit essential oil in many ways such as inhaling it directly from the bottle in times of stress. Or you can mix it with a carrier like jojoba oil (recipe below) and apply it topically to sore muscles for soothing relief.
If I still haven’t convinced you of grapefruit oil’s awesome-ness, here’s the top 5 benefits of this wondrous liquid plus my favourite grapefruit essential oil recipes.
01| Grapefruit oil controls appetite
Yup, a little whiff of this throughout the day can help stave off cravings. Grapefruit contains a substance called nootkatone which helps activate enzymes in the saliva that can promote weight loss by breaking down body fat, which is why it always featured in my mother’s 1980s diet plans.
I have a little bottle of Atlantic Aromatics Grapefruit Oil at my desk in work and also carry a roller blend (recipe below) in my handbag.
02| Grapefruit oil stimulates hormone secretion
Grapefruit oil is very stimulating and can help positively effect both body and mind. Grapefruit also stimulates the endocrine glands which is turn, promotes the secretion of hormones and enzymes. It boosts the metabolism, and aids digestion and the nervous system.
03| Grapefruit oil helps with depression
Grapefruit oil is naturally uplifting and stimulating, which helps improve mood. It’s aroma induces positive feelings and can relieve anxiety and stress. I like to use a little in a room diffuser or oil burner when I’m working from home. You can also carry it in a small atomiser spray for a quick whiff on the go (recipe below).
04| Grapefruit oil eliminates and prevents infections
As grapefruit oil has antimicrobial properties, it makes a great disinfectant and is particularly good at treating skin infections.
05| Grapefruit oil regulates oily skin and reduces cellulite
You can add a few drops of grapefruit oil to your regular creams and lotions to help treat acne and oily skin. It is also known to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, due to its stimulating effects.
